Does Medicare Advantage include drug coverage?
Last reviewed: · Big Sioux Benefits Data Desk
Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D drug coverage, but not all of them do. Plans that include it are designated MA-PD; plans that do not are MA-only. The CY2026 landscape file for Minnehaha County shows both kinds side by side, including $0-premium plans in each category, so the distinction is easy to miss when comparing on premium alone.
The qualifier, and this is the expensive part: if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage, you generally cannot also buy a standalone Part D plan. And if you enroll in an MA-only plan without other creditable drug coverage, you can accumulate a Part D late enrollment penalty that follows you permanently. MA-only plans make sense for specific people, notably veterans with VA drug coverage, and are a costly accident for everyone else.
What to check before enrolling
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the plan MA-PD or MA-only? | MA-only means no drug coverage, and usually no way to add it separately |
| Do I have other creditable drug coverage? | VA, employer, or retiree coverage can make an MA-only plan reasonable |
| Are my drugs on the plan's formulary? | A plan can include drug coverage and still not cover your particular drug |
| What is the plan's Part D deductible? | Separate from the medical deductible, capped at $615 in 2026 |
| Is my pharmacy preferred under this plan? | Preferred status changes what the same drug costs you |
The three-phase Part D structure and the $2,100 out-of-pocket cap work the same way inside a Medicare Advantage plan as they do in a standalone Part D plan, so nothing about the cap changes by going one route or the other. What changes is the network, the medical benefits, and whether drug coverage is bundled at all. Your county's actual plan lineup is on the South Dakota county guide, and standalone drug coverage is explained in Part D prescription drug plans.

Can I add a separate Part D plan to my Medicare Advantage plan?
Usually not. If your Medicare Advantage plan includes drug coverage, enrolling in a standalone Part D plan can disenroll you from the Advantage plan entirely and return you to Original Medicare. There are narrow exceptions, mainly for certain private fee-for-service and medical savings account plans, so confirm before acting.
Does the $2,100 cap apply to Medicare Advantage drug coverage?
Yes. The annual Part D out-of-pocket threshold applies to drug coverage delivered through a Medicare Advantage plan just as it does through a standalone plan. The plan's separate medical out-of-pocket maximum is a different limit covering different costs.
